A lot of mock drafts have the Eagles selecting Oklahome State tight end Brandon Pettigrew with one of their first round picks in April draft. Pettigrew’s performance at the NFL Combine this weekend though has left me far from impressed. Pettigrew ran the 40 in 4.85 seconds - third worst among the tights ends - and put up just 22 reps in the bench press.
I’ve said multiple times since we’ve launched this blog last month that I don’t want to see the Eagles select a TE in the first round, and Pettigrew’s performance at the combine just reinforces my stance. We have much bigger needs than tight end right now and there just isn’t a sure fire tight end worth taking in the first round of the draft.
South Carolina’s Jared Cook was much more impressive than Pettigrew with a 4.5 40 yard dash and 41 inch vertical leap, but I don’t see a point in the Eagles taking a chance on him in the first round either.
