Dawkins to Denver Is Official…. Tear

Brian Dawkins is officially a Denver Bronco.  I don’t want to get into this too much because honestly I’m depressed about the entire situation.  Dawkins wasn’t just my favorite football player of all time, he was my favorite athlete in any sport ever.  I don’t know how I’ll be able to handle seeing Dawkins in a Denver jersey next year, but I would imagine it won’t be well.

In the Eagles defense here, the reported deal was 5 years for 17 mil.  A 5 year contract for a 35 year old safety is just lunacy.  Didn’t the Broncos learn from the John Lynch experiment?  Based on those numbers it’s not tough to see why Dawkins took the deal  and why the Eagles didn’t match.

This doesn’t in any way make up for the Eagles letting Dawkins reach free agency and test the waters.  He would have signed for a lot less than that to stay in Philly if they just would have gotten a deal in place before he could test the waters.  The Eagles though underestimated the market for Dawkins and tried to play hardball.  Well Andy, good job.  You successfully allowed the heart and soul of your team - the only true leader you had - to leave because you couldn’t get a deal in place.  Maybe the time you spent baby sitting and catering to Donovan McNabb would have been better spent negotiating with Dawkins.  At least Donovan got what he wanted.  That’s what’s most important.

Good luck, Brian.  There will never be another one like you in Philadelphia.  Oh… and Andy, you better do something amazing to win the fans back because right now you are public enemy #1 in my mind.

If those are the terms - then I agree, the Birds couldn’t do it - and good for B-Dawk, that’s a hell of a contract at his age. If it isn’t, and we find that the Birds could have signed him for 1-2 years, then this is nothing other than a shame.

Well the Heart of the Eagles has officially been torn out!

The problem Iggle is that the Eagles let Dawkins reach free agency. They should have locked him up with a 2 year deal worth $6-7 mil within a week of the season ending. Dawkins called the Eagles bluff and we lost one of the greatest players to ever wear an Eagles jersey. I would have been upset if they signed Dawkins to a 5 year deal, but I can’t imagine he would have turned down a 2 year, $7 mil deal before ever reaching free agency.

If you would have told me a month ago that Sports On Broad’s 100th post would be about Dawkins officially leaving the Eagles, I would have shot you in the kneecap.

Dawkins still has some steam left in him. I think Eagles Management gets to tied up in the “Age Factor.” Afterall, age is just a number. He played well this Season… They should of put more consideration in resigning him. He would definitely be beneficial on the field and not a liability. And who’s going to step up as the locker-room leader now? Who’s going to fire up the team?

Next time I see Andy Reid I will fling more of my own shit at him than a Rhesus Macaque. There is no doubt that the team will suffer and I am saddened by this all around.

I don’t understand how the fans are ever supposed to know what the front office is thinking. You watch the games, you look at what is going on around the league and you see how things need to be done on your team. Year after miserable year the FO makes a series of stupid moves, usually just being complacent and leaving me waiting for some master plan that never happens. This year however, they did the most unacceptable and indescribably stupid thing I have ever seen in my life. They let BRIAN DAWKINS walk. How do you make up for that? Dawkplex is retired.

I don’t know how they let Dawkins out of Philly either. It’s a sad day. I feel like I lost a family member. Its not going to be right seeing #20 wearing blue and orange next year.
